Hello There!
So, as our first “couples” post, we thought we would do a
quick review on the movie we saw recently; The Great Gatsby. Now, we don’t
often get to go to the movies anymore, too expensive! But it was mother’s day,
and that’s what one of the mothers wanted to do, and we weren’t complaining! So
it was a nice little treat, especially since it was a long awaited movie for
both of us. We both read the book in High School a million years ago, and have
read it a couple times since then. It was one of the few books that were
assigned Korina actually enjoyed and kept in the bookshelf. And, the original
movie was great, fantastically done. So, the movie coming out was super
exciting and we really looked forward to it.
So, Baz Luhrmann, the same director of Romeo+Juliet and
Moulin Rouge, directs the movie. Now, at any given point, if you were to walk
in our apartment there will either be a Disney movie on or Moulin Rouge. It’s
our go-to movie to have on when we are working around the house cleaning or
pretending to clean and really just singing lame duets. One of our favorite
movies, especially Dillon’s. So we knew
what we were getting into when The Great Gatsby was starting. We expected a lot
of fantasy, over the top, and great music. And that is exactly what we got.
Everything was so over the top and extravagant. I don’t know that anyone else
could take such a modern twist on a movie, but it still remain historically
period and accurate.
One of our favorite things about the movie was how the music
was used. That can make or break a movie. There were moments where the music
alone made the scenes so emotional and intense, not to mention the acting!
Seriously, how anyone can say Leonardo DiCapprio is anything but PHENOMINAL is
beyond us! And, the man who played Tom was so good!! And we looked him up on
IMDB, which we find ourselves doing during EVERY movie we ever see, and he
hasn’t really been in anything. So this is like his first really big role and
he, paired with Leo, was more then we could handle sometimes.
The only problem that we saw; Korina, who studied costuming,
found some of the costumes to be period authentic, and others weren’t.
Consistency would have been nice, but I am sure there was some deeper meaning
behind making that decision that we may have missed.
Not ashamed to admit we both cried, Korina far more then
Dillon. Never have we been in a movie where, when the big climax happens, the
movie goes silent and so does the entire theater. You could have heard a pin
drop. It was nuts.
All in all, if you go into it knowing the directors past
work, you know what your getting and your happy with it. We loved it, well
worth the ticket price. We WILL be buying it as soon as it’s out on BlueRay. No
doubts about it. If you can only see a few movies a year, like us, we would for
sure encourage you to add this to your list! A++ from us!
Go out and spend time with your lovies!
